Makerere University has been closed after striking lecturers’ refused to budge in their demand for a pay

rise and an immediate refund of Shs16.7 billion in retirement benefits owed to them by National Insurance Corporation.

Students who just a week ago returned to the institution hoping to start the second semester are now stranded at the country’s oldest and biggest public university.

The decision to close the university was taken after a meeting between the University Council and other stakeholders. The council, which is the highest administrative organ of institution, decided to close the university as they continue to negotiate outstanding issues with government.

In a meeting with the university stakeholders on Thursday, the University Council chairman, Mr Charles Wana Etyem, told lecturers that President Museveni had requested them not to lay down their tools as they continue to negotiate.

Mr Wana also informed lecturers that government is carrying out a salary review for all civil servants.
